A faction of the banned insurgent outfit National Front Of Twipra signed an agreement with the government to abjure violence and join the mainstream.

The Memorandum Of Settlement mandates NLFT to abide by the Constitution Of India. The Memorandum was signed by Kajal Debbarna and Sudhir Debbarna of NLFT(SD) and MHA Joint Secretary (North East) Satyendra Garg, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Tripura.

What is NLFT?

It was in 1989 that NLFT first emerged in the aftermath of the ethnic riots in the state. It claims to represent the marginalized indigenous population through armed rebellion. Since 1997 it is a banned under the Unlawful Activities ( Prevention ) Act and has been responsible for over 300 insurgency incidents. In 2015 peace talks with them were initiated.
