The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly has passed the HP Freedom of Religion Bill, 2019. The HP Freedom of Religion Bill, 2019 makes forcible conversion a crime which will be punishable up to five years. The Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2006, which was passed by the earlier Congress government, has been repealed with the passing of this bill.

As per the government, with passing of this bill “luring people with financial and other benefits” will be prevented. The law prohibits conversion by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, inducement or by any fraudulent means or by way of marriage. There is also a provision in the bill for action against forced marriage against the priest who solemnises it, be it a Maulvi, pandit or father.
